A drain auger, also known as a plumber’s snake, is a flexible rod inserted into plumbing to dislodge clogs. Usually reserved for tougher jobs that cannot be solved with a plunger, a drain snake employs the use of a coiled metal wire inserted into the affected pipes, while an operator manually or electronically turns a crank to keep the coil rotating as it passes through.
Clogs caused by materials such as tree roots, leaves, etc. are easily broken up by the auger, while smaller obstacles are caught up in the coils and pulled out by the operator, allowing for drainage to take place.
The use of a manual or electric drain auger is particularly useful for clogged or plugged:
Additionally, aside from attacking the main source of the clog, the coil’s edges gently scrape and clean the inside of the pipe, removing extra build-up that will prevent future clogs from happening, as well.
