Like many things in your home, regular maintenance is the key to keeping your plumbing in good working order all year round. That’s why regular, scheduled sump pump pit and septic tank pumping is the best way to keep your Hamilton home’s sewer and drain system operating at peak performance year after year. But how often do you need to have your septic system pumped by a plumber? Find out below.

Determining the frequency

There are a lot of different considerations that go into to calculating the frequency of the septic tank pumping that your home requires. You’ll need to think about:

  • System capacity—Generally speaking, a 2000-litre septic tank will need to be pumped out more frequently than a tank with a 5000-litre capacity. Especially if both tanks are being used by the same number of people in the home or there is equal usage in other regards.

  • Level of usage—The level of usage that the septic system gets largely depends on how many occupants there are in the home. You may also want to have your septic tank or sump pump pit serviced by an experienced Hamilton plumber if you are expecting, or have just had, a large number of visitors that have increased your normal usage.

  • Date of the last pumping—Generally speaking, you should have your septic tank pumped every three to five years, depending on the amount of occupants and level of usage. If you can’t remember the last time you had your system pumped, it’s a good idea to err on the side of caution and have it pumped before you experience a back-up.

  • Garbage disposal—Homes that use a garbage disposal will need to have their septic tank pumped more frequently, usually once a year, due to the rapid accumulation of sludge that the septic tank will acquire.

Maintaining your sump pump

In many cases, residential septic issues aren’t due to a problem with the septic tank itself, but lie somewhere else in the sewer and drain system. Sewage holding tanks, sewage ejection pits, and sump pump pits all need to be pumped out from time to time to ensure that they continue to work properly.
