IS MY WATER PRESSURE TOO HIGH?

While low water pressure can be frustrating, high water pressure can cause leaks, pipe damage and wasted water. Here’s an overview of the issue and how to address it.

Why is it a problem?

High water pressure means more water is flowing out of your faucets faster. In addition to inflating your water bill, it puts increased stress on your plumbing. This makes leaks and other issues more likely. High water pressure also strains any appliances connected to your plumbing system such as a dishwasher or washing machine, which can reduce their lifespan.

What are the signs?

If you notice any of the following signs, there’s a good chance your water pressure is too high.

  • Noisy pipes. When the pressure is too high, water is forced through the pipes very quickly. This can cause the pipes to move around and clank together.

  • Leaky faucets. If a faucet leaks only when you’re using other plumbing fixtures, this is likely a sign that your water pressure is too high

  • Running toilets. While this is a less common sign, toilets that run continuously may indicate excessively high water pressure.

Although these signs don’t necessarily confirm that your water pressure is too high, you should call a plumber to assess the issue nonetheless.

What can cause it?

Your water pressure might be too high if your home is located at the bottom of a hill or near tall buildings that require higher water pressure. Other common causes of high water pressure include thermal expansion due to a problem with your water heater.

How can you fix it?

Unless your high water pressure is caused by a faulty water heater, the problem can often be resolved by installing a pressure-reducing valve. This will bring your water pressure back down to a sustainable level. However, if there’s an issue with your hot water heater, you’ll need to have it repaired or replaced by a professional.
